Academic Earth

“Academic Earth was launched on the premise that everyone deserves access to a world-class education. In 2009, we built the first collection of free online college courses from the world’s top universities. The world of open education has exploded since then, so today our curated lists of online courses are hand selected by our staff to show you the very best offerings by subject area. We also make sure there is something for everyone: whether you want to explore a new topic or advance in your current field, we bring the amazing world of academia to you for free.”

Education is old. The current public school system in the US dates back to the 19th century and wasn’t designed to scale the way it has. Lots of companies are working to “disrupt” education by changing the way things work in the classroom and by bringing the classroom online.”

Open Learning Initiative

Improve learning and teaching through science

OLI supports better learning and instruction with high-quality, scientifically based, classroom-tested online courses and materials.

This Learning Engineering approach means courses are designed based on learning science research. But it also means, in turn, they contribute to that research and propel the domain of learning science forward.

Democratize learning

We’re committed to keeping our courses low-cost for classrooms, and free for independent learners.

Our low maintenance fees for classroom use help cover the real-world costs of providing hosting, tech support, ongoing content improvement, and technological maintenance of the delivery platform. This is how we can continue to offer the materials free for internet-connected independent learners anywhere in the world.

Foster a community

We aim to create to community of use, research, and development to allow for the continuous evaluation, improvement, and growth of courses and learning materials.

OLI and The Simon Initiative are active in the Open Educational Resources community. We attend and present at related conferences, publish our research findings, and collaborate with many like-minded organizations, while working with educators and institutions to develop new courses, research projects, and learning technologies.”
